About the artist

Sakar Sleman was born in 1979 in Sulaymaniyah, where he continues to live and work. His multidisciplinary practice, moving across painting, installation, land art, and public intervention, engages with themes of the female body, Kurdish political history, and collective memory. He grew up under the shadow of the Anfal campaigns in the late 1980s and 1990s, and recounts visiting Amna Suraka—then a center of torture and execution—for the first time at the age of fifteen. This biographical ground forms the basis of the relationship he establishes with space, material, and history. Sleman participated in the Iraq Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale (2017), and his works have been exhibited internationally, including at the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto (2023–2024), and within the Imago Mundi collection.
